With its hardwood floors, blonde wooden furniture and exposed lightbulbs, La Merceria is clearly playing up the contemporary pizza angle, as all that remains of this 1950s-haberdasher’s shop are some old photographs and framed packs of spare buttons. For us, the day we went for lunch: a beautiful appetizer of grilled seasonal vegetables, pesto and homemade breadsticks; a delicious Parma pizza with glistening Parma ham and Parmesan – or a gourmet Valtellina topped with generous amounts of bresaola, ricotta and spinach; before a classic tiramisu for a sweet finale.
FEELING THIRSTY? There’s a short wine list that’s 100% Italian: a powerful Dolcetto-d’Alba from Piedmont (€7 a glass), a Chardonnay from Puglia (€5), a Nero-d’Avola from Sicily (€19 a bottle)…
