Le Guide Fooding’s Best Fried-Style of 2016

The scene of the crime? A discreet split-level joint with a bar for six pairs of butt cheeks on the ground floor, and a dining room with pink banquettes, wooden barstools and… a big central washbasin upstairs! Why? Because the star of Hero is the flammable Korean fried chicken, dripping with spicy gochujang chili sauce – which is even better when eaten with your hands! To go with it all, there’s a hip-hop soundtrack and the sides of your choice: excellent kimchi with shiitake mushrooms and pine nuts; incredible red peppered salsify breaded in panko dunked into a garlic-ginger mayo; explosive buns filled with pickled cabbage and jalapeños; organic Breton seaweed salad in a clever mirin-soy-sesame mixture; or for the very fresh finale, a fusion dessert combining poached pear, yuzu cream and sesame crumble. // G.LeP.

FEELING THIRSTY? There’s delicate Deck & Donohue beer (€7 for 330 ml), natural Le P’tit Blanc from Le Tue-Boeuf (€35) or nine cocktails on the menu, including a wild 2NE1 combining Del Maguey mezcal, Suze, Fernet-Branca, aloe vera and cucumber (€11).

PRICE: Set menus €12-15 (weekday lunch), mains from €12.50 to €18. Sandwiches €7-9, sides €3-10, desserts €7 to €7.50.
